Timeline and steps for selecting the new Gilroy Unified School District Superintendent.
On January 12, 2023, at the regular Board of Education meeting, long-time GUSD Superintendent Deborah Flores announced her retirement, effective June 30, 2023, after serving in the position for 16 years. The Board of Education has hired Leadership Associates to lead the search process to hire a new Superintendent. Information and regular updates will be shared with the public here.
Superintendent Search Timeline
The Board of Education is committed to transparent communication as the new Superintendent is hired. Following is a projected timeline for the search and selection process. Note: dates are subject to change.
February
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
- February 8: Initial meeting with GUSD Board of Education to determine characteristics, skills and qualities desired in new superintendent. View job description.
- February 8: Board publicly announces search timeline and procedures during a special board meeting.
- February 15: Online survey opens English/ Spanish
March
ADVERTISEMENT & RECRUITMENT
- Late February-early March: Comprehensive reference and background checks on applicants
- March 1 and 2: Meetings to receive input from stakeholder groups
- March 2: Community input in-person sessions at Christopher High and Gilroy High
- March 3: Community input survey closes
- Throughout March: Active recruitment
- March 22: Deadline for applications
April
INTERVIEWS & SELECTION
- April 13: Board meets with consultants in closed session to review applications and select candidates to be interviewed
- April 21-22: Board interviews candidates and selects finalists in closed session
- Late April or early May: Board completes the validation process of leading candidates and determines finalist(s)

CONTRACT APPROVAL
May 18: Board approves superintendent contract at regular board meeting. Watch the livestream.

Thet Board of Education will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, February 8, at 6 pm, at the District Office to meet publicly with Leadership Associates, an executive recruitment firm, hired to assist in the hiring of the District's next Superintendent.
