Gilroy Unified School District began the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) in August of 2012. The multi-tiered framework begins with establishing school-wide expected behaviors, teaches those expectations to students, and then rewards students when they exhibit those positive behaviors.

The PBIS multi-tiered system of support offers staff and students the tools to help to increase students’ overall academic achievement through:

  • Clear expectations and various resources to help create a positive school climate
  • Engage students in the learning community
  • Develop coping, stress management, and conflict resolution skills through restorative practices
  • Understand the effects of bullying and how we all play a role in preventing it
  • Develop a sense of what it means to be a member of the community

The District’s PBIS goals consist of:

  • Creating a positive school culture and utilizing multiple systems of support
  • Improving student attendance by creating a sense of school community
  • Increasing parent involvement through parent outreach and training
  • Focus school culture on the:
    • Implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
    • Successful integration of programs into a multi-tiered system of support positively affecting behavior and attendance
    • Multi-tiered system of support to address chronic absenteeism and truancy
