Gilroy, CA – Last week, the Gilroy Unified School District became aware of a large party held at a private residence the weekend of October 16-18. According to social media posts obtained by the district, students from Gilroy High School and Christopher High School were both in attendance. At least one of the attendees has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.
The Gilroy Unified School District notified the Santa Clara County Public Health Department and out of an abundance of caution cancelled athletic conditioning at both comprehensive high schools for the recommended 14-day period, October 19-November 2, 2020. At the time of the event, athletic conditioning was the only on-campus activity happening for students in the district.
In addition, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department established a special testing site at the South County Annex (former Antonio Del Buono Elementary School site) on Saturday, October 23, 2020. GUSD and the Public Health Department issued a joint notification that was sent to all families and students in the district, ages 14 and older, encouraging them to get tested.
Principals from both Gilroy High School and Christopher High School also notified students of the cancellation of athletic conditioning for the recommended time period. The GUSD Superintendent Dr. Deborah A. Flores also communicated with families and students at both high schools about the cancelation and reminded them of the importance of maintaining social distancing protocols, mask wearing, hand washing and at-home health screenings.
