GUSD Board of Education approves return to on-campus, in-person hybrid learning for elementary school students
GUSD Communications

Gilroy, CA – The Gilroy Unified District Board of Education approved a recommendation from the GUSD Reopening Planning Committee for a return to on-campus, in-person hybrid learning for elementary school students, in pre-kindergarten through fifth grades, beginning Thursday, April 15, 2021.  As GUSD begins the reopening of 14 campuses throughout Gilroy after a year-long closure because of the COVID-19 pandemic, families of elementary school students will be able to choose to have their child participate in on-campus learning or remain in distance learning through the end of the 2020-21 school year.

After the Board of Education’s action at the March 18 regular meeting, the Gilroy Unified School District will send a Decision Form to all families of elementary school students that indicates whether their students will remain in distance learning or begin on-campus learning for the remainder of the school year.  Decision Forms must be submitted by March 25 or students will automatically be enrolled in distance learning for the rest of the year.

The Board of Education approved a phased-in return for pre-kindergarten through second grades beginning on April 15 and a return for students in grades three through five on April 19.  The Gilroy Unified School District will implement a new distance-learning model concurrently with the on-campus learning model.  In the new model, all students will participate in distance learning on Wednesdays.  On campus instruction will take place in the mornings Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at seven elementary schools, and students in this program will complete their school days at home.  Students who remain in distance learning will have a combination of independent work teacher-led instruction five days a week.

A motion for a return to on-campus, in-person learning for students in sixth to twelfth grades did not pass.    A special Board Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, March 25, at 6:00 pm for the Board of Education to consider alternative plans for students in middle and high school.
