Dear GUSD Families,
As we move through the second half of the school year, our commitment to providing high-quality educational experiences for all students remains steadfast. We continue to focus on creating engaging, challenging, and meaningful learning opportunities in safe environments for every child in our district.
In the past months, the Board of Education and District have reaffirmed our commitment to serving all students and families, regardless of their immigration status.
By law, all children in the United States have the right to a free and appropriate public education (Plyler v. Doe, 457 U.S. 202 (1982), regardless of immigration or citizenship status, and every student in California has the right to attend public school free from discrimination, harassment, intimidation and bullying.
We firmly believe that every child deserves access to a high-quality education as a pathway to success and positive outcomes. All children, without exception, should have the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive without fear or stress.
At the January 16 regular meeting, the Gilroy Unified School District Board of Education adopted a resolution in support of our students and our intention to abide by the laws set in place to protect students while they are in our care. Resolution #24/25-18 (English / Spanish) ensures that all students in the Gilroy Unified School District will be provided a safe environment where they can receive a positive educational experience.
The Family Educational and Privacy Act (FERPA) prevents the District from disclosing or distributing student information with any outside agency without written permission from parents/guardians. Additionally, in accordance with AB 699, the District does not collect or maintain records related to students’ or family members’ citizenship or immigration status during the enrollment process. Furthermore, Board Policy 0141 prohibits unlawful discrimination based on actual or perceived race, color, ancestry, nationality, national origin or immigration status.
Your feedback is invaluable to us, and I encourage you to share your thoughts and perspectives. Please consider participating in our surveys, attending school-based meetings and events, and joining me at our monthly Coffee with the Superintendent. These informal gatherings provide a great opportunity for direct conversation, and I truly appreciate the insights that come from these interactions.
I am incredibly grateful for the hard work of our staff in ensuring that every student has a positive experience on our campuses. Our work is only possible with the support and partnership of our families, and I thank you for being an essential part of this shared vision.
Sincerely,
Anisha Munshi, Ed.D.
Superintendent
