Members of the Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Deborah A. Flores are proud of all of the accomplishments that occur throughout the school year.

Recognitions provide the opportunity to acknowledge students, staff, school sites, community members, and organizations for their amazing accomplishments and contributions.

End the Digital Divide in South Co. Coalition

At the September 3, 2020 GUSD Board Meeting, we recognized 42 volunteers of the "End the Digital Divide in South County" Coalition for the services they provided as we began the 2020-21 school year. GUSD had many of our own employees help as part of the Coalition, along with staff members from the Santa Clara County Office of the District Attorney, Santa Clara County Probation Office, Gilroy Rotary, Gilroy Little League, the South County Youth Task Force, Community Solutions, Valley Health Clinic, City of Gilroy, LGBTQ Youth Space, Conxion (Connection), and Justice Ed. The Coalition deployed volunteers at each of our schools during Chromebook Distribution. Volunteers provided in-person “coach ups” (quick 15-20 minute tutorials) to parents and caregivers on how to log-in to their child’s computer, access Google Classroom and Zoom, and provided other assistance.

They provided assistance in English and Spanish, and really helped our families feel ready to begin the school year. Their help reduced the pressure on families to figure out the technology on their own and also showed them that the devices and platforms for distance learning were user-friendly. The desire for our students to kick-off the school year feeling ready and comfortable was the goal of all of these volunteers, and we are so grateful for the support they provided.

August 6, 2020 GUSD Board Meeting Recognitions

At the August 6, 2020 GUSD Board Meeting, we were pleased to recognize Ciarra Construction and the Oxley family for their incredible contributions to improvements at Luigi Aprea Elementary School. Luigi Aprea Elementary has long been in need of roof rafter tail repair work to preserve the existing roof structure and architectural design. Ciarra Construction donated materials and labor to complete all of the work for these repairs. Ciarra Construction repaired the damage to the over 750 exposed roof rafter tails and prevented further damage to the roof structure. This work was completed in late spring in time for the entire school to be painted over the summer, and the cost of the donated work totaled over $92,000.

June 11, 2020 GUSD Board Recognitions

After a lengthy hiatus celebrating the accomplishments of staff and students in GUSD, at the June 11, 2020 GUSD Board Meeting, we recognized the top community service awardees at each of our four high schools. Students recognized at this board meeting were in the top 5% of celebrants in their graduating class and as a whole, the Class of 2020 collectively contributed 17,075 community service hours in the Gilroy community!

February 13, 2020 GUSD Board Recognitions

At the February 13, 2020, GUSD Board Meeting, we were pleased to recognized five outstanding members of the GUSD community! We celebrated the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce Spice of Life award winners: Donna Kline from Eliot Elementary, who was named the 2020 Educator of the Year; Jane Tovar, senior at GECA, who was named the 2020 Susan Valenta Youth Leadership award recipient; Elaine Bonino, retired GUSD teacher, who was named the 2020 Woman of the Year, and Jaime Rosso, retired GUSD Board Member, who was named the 2020 Man of the Year. Then we celebrated ASMS teacher, Ramona Trevino, who was named the 2019 Special Education Teacher of the Year, by the San Andreas Regional Center.

January 30, 2020 GUSD Board Recognitions

At the January 30, 2020 GUSD Board Meeting, the Board of Education was proud to recognize the winners of the VFW District 12 essay contest for both middle and high school: Paige DeRosa, a seventh grader at Brownell Middle School, and Danielle Russell, a junior at Christopher High School. Paige won the District 12 "Patriot's Pen" essay contest. Danielle won the District 12 "Voices of Democracy" essay contest, and finished at the third runner-up in the State of California. December 12, 2019 GUSD Board Recognitions

At the December 12, 2019 Board Meeting, the Gilroy Unified School District was proud to recognize the 2019 CCS Fall Honor Coach, Doug Pickford, girls water polo coach at Gilroy High School. The Board of Education also recognized outgoing Board President, James E. Pace, and thanked him for his service to the Gilroy Unified School District.

November 21, 2019 GUSD Board Recognitions

At the November 21, 2019 Board Meeting, the Gilroy Unified School District was proud to recognize 51 students from El Roble Elementary, Las Animas Elementary and Brownell Middle Schools, who received the highest score possible on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests in English Language Arts (ELA) and/or Mathematics, including seven students who had highest possible scores on both the ELA and Mathematics section of the test! Congratulations to all!

November 7, 2019 GUSD Board Recognitions

At the November 7, 2019 GUSD Board Meeting, we were pleased to welcome members of the Santa Clara County Public Health Department as they awarded Safe Routes to School champions, including former GUSD Board Member Jaime Rosso, Rucker Elementary Principal Jean Wells-Southland, Solorsano Counselors Francisca Garcia and Rosie Ramon, and Antonio Del Buono parent volunteer Laura Wilson.

The Board of Education recognized the staff and students of Eliot Elementary School for receiving a Platinum Medal recognition from the California PBIS Coalition. The Board recognized Antonio Del Buono Principal Velia Codiga for being named the Mt. Madonna YMCA Youth Champion award recipient at their annual Fall-anthropy event.

Finally, the Board of Education was pleased to recognize eight students from Antonio Del Buono Elementary, Eliot Elementary and Luigi Aprea Elementary, who received the highest score possible on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests in English Language Arts or Mathematics.

October 17, 2019 GUSD Board Recognitions

At the October 17, 2019 GUSD Board Meeting, Kaiser Permanente recognized the Gilroy Unified School District for its contributions to the Gilroy community and families, especially following the Garlic Festival incident. Community Engagement Director, Sharon Ngo-Tran and two physicians from the Kaiser Permanente office in Gilroy presented Superintendent Flores and Board President James Pace with a card signed by Kaiser employees and a gift basket.

Then the Board of Education recognized 18 students from Rod Kelley and Rucker Elementary Schools who received the highest score possible on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics, including three students who had highest possible scores on both the ELA and Mathematics section of the test!

Finally, the Board of Education formally recognized the 2019 SCCOE Teacher of the Year, Jennifer Evans, from Rod Kelley for her contributions to the students of the Gilroy Unified School District.

October 3, 2019 GUSD Board Recognitions

At the October 3, 2019 Board Meeting, the Gilroy Unified School District was pleased to recognize 17 students from Ascencion Solorsano Middle School, who received the highest score possible on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics, including three students who had highest possible scores on both the ELA and Mathematics section of the test!

September 19, 2019 GUSD Board Recognitions

At the September 19, 2019 GUSD Board Meeting, the Gilroy Unified School District was pleased to recognize team members from Rebekah Children's Services, Community Solutions and the Santa Clara County Department of Behavioral Health for their close partnership in providing support to the Gilroy community following the Gilroy Garlic Festival shootings. Team members were given a glass garlic bulb made by Gilroy High School graduate, Spencer Silva, who sent the bulbs from his home in Alaska. Spencer, who is the son of retired GHS Cathy Silva, is donating all proceeds from the sales of the garlic bulbs to the Gilroy Foundation's Gilroy Garlic Festival Victims Relief Fund.

The Gilroy Unified School District Board of Education then recognized long-time GUSD Director of Safety, Energy Efficiency and Facilities Rentals: Cheryl Galloway, for her work with the City of Gilroy's Emergency Operations Center following the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting. Cheryl has moved on from GUSD following a 12-year career.

Finally, the Gilroy Unified School District was pleased to recognize 32 students from Gilroy High School and South Valley Middle School, who received the highest score possible on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics, including seven students who had highest possible scores on both the ELA and Mathematics section of the test!

At the September 5, 2019 GUSD Board Meeting, the Gilroy Unified School District was pleased to recognize 52 students from Christopher High School and GECA, who received the highest score possible on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics, including 18 students who had highest possible scores on both the ELA and Mathematics section of the test!
