Mental Health and Wellness Resources
The Gilroy Unified School District is focused on building safe and inclusive schools where the culture reflects trust, respect, empathy and accountability. The mental health and social emotional well being of our students is at the core of our instructional model. We firmly believe that the physical, mental and social-emotional well-being of children is connected to their academic achievement.
Onsite Supports
Addressing students’ mental health and emotional well-being is important to ensure academic success. GUSD supports students' emotional needs through a variety of district support services and partnerships with community agencies.
Individual and Group Counseling Services
Credentialed and/or licensed mental health providers meet with students individually or in small groups to develop skills to improve mental health related topics affecting our students. Topics include, but are not limited to: healthy relationships, depression, and anxiety.
Social Emotional Learning
SEL fosters the development of social and emotional skills through skills taught in the classroom. SEL is a supplemental curriculum used at all grade levels.
IEP-Based Mental Health Services
Students with disabilities who require mental health services to meet their IEP goals receive small group instruction, individual and/or group counseling focused on developing skills specific to their treatment goals.
Wellness Centers for Middle and High School Students
Students can visit on-campus Wellness Centers for mental health support. They can take a break and access a range of services and programs. Counselors are also available to provide individualized support as needed. Centers are open during school hours with teacher permission.
GUSD Mental Health Personnel
Members of our mental health team serve in various capacities for our students. Some support a student's academic journey. Some provide referrals for students who need most extensive support. Some focus on health assessments. And others provide behavior supports. The entire team strives to meet a student's need on campus and in the community.
Social Workers
Mental-health therapists provide school-based mental health services to students to support successful classroom participation. They are subject matter experts in mental-health counseling, special education, threat assessments and behavior modification.
School Psychologists
School psychologists apply psycho-educational principles and knowledge in the assessment, classification, treatment and education of children with school-related learning, social and emotional difficulties or behavior issues.
Behavior Specialists
Behavior specialists deliver behavior support work with designated students.
Registered Behavior Technicians
Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) are certified paraprofessionals who provide behavior intervention and support.
School-Linked Services Liaisons
School-linked services (SLS) liaisons diffuse and triage student crisis situations and connect students to appropriate services.
Academic Coordinators/Counselors
Academic Coordinators (ACs) and counselors focus on the academic progress of students to meet graduation requirements. They also refer students to mental-health support providers when needed.
