Curriculum Prospectus
Prospectuses provide an overview of Gilroy Unified School District’s core instructional programs, their publishers, and their alignment with California Department of Education standards and the California Education Code. They are intended to inform families, educators, and adoption committees about GUSD’s commitment to rigorous, standards-aligned instruction, equitable access to grade-level content, and support for teachers in implementing research-based, differentiated curriculum that meets the diverse needs of all students.
Parents/guardians have the right to review the curriculum. If, after review, parents/guardians believe an aspect of the curriculum to be controversial, they may refer to Board Policy (BP) 6144 Controversial Issues, Board Policy (BP) 1312.2 Complaints Concerning Instructional Materials and Board Policy (BP) 6141.2 Recognition of Religious Beliefs and Customs and submit a written request to the school principal.
In addition to prospectuses, teachers may use supplementary instructional materials (such as articles, videos, or online resources) to support student learning. These supplementary materials may not always be listed in the prospectus but are subject to the same review rights. Parents/guardians may request to review such materials and, where permitted by law, may request in writing that their child be excused (“opt out”) from participation. Nothing in a school’s prospectus or supplementary materials should be interpreted as requiring students to affirm or disavow any particular personally or privately held world view, religious doctrine, or opinion.
