GUSD receives No Kid Hungry grant to help feed kids

GUSD Communications

As part of No Kid Hungry’s continuing effort to ensure all children in Gilroy remain nourished and healthy, the Gilroy Unified School District has received $42,000 in grant funding to help feed more children in the community.

“No child should have to struggle with an empty stomach or stress about when they will eat again. This grant will help reach more kids with the food they need to grow up healthy, educated and strong,” said No Kid Hungry Spox, Field Manager for the No Kid Hungry Campaign.

This grant was awarded to GUSD with the purpose of increasing participation in the School Breakfast Program (SBP) at five school sites. The funds will enhance daily breakfast participation by purchasing essential equipment (utility carts, insulated bags, and display units) for five schools in our district: El Roble, Eliot, Rucker, Glen View, and Las Animas Elementary Schools.

GUSD Food Service Supervisor, Jorge Huapaya Necochea shared, "Our primary goal is to expand access to breakfast, particularly for our younger students who may not currently have adequate time to eat due to the distance they must travel to access food by bringing food closer to their classrooms. Additionally, we aim to reach students who typically do not participate in the program by bringing food closer to where they are during morning and break periods.

We’re excited about the opportunity this grant provides and are committed to making meaningful improvements that support student nutrition and well-being."
