Trustee Melissa Aguirre

Melissa Nicholson Aguirre was elected to the Gilroy Unified Board of Education in November of 2020.

Born and raised in Gilroy, Aguirre was involved in school and community events along with city-offered sports. She knew at a young age that being a teacher was what she was meant to do. She attended local schools including El Roble and Gilroy High (Go Mustangs!).  After spending two years at Gavilan Community College, Melissa earned an athletic scholarship to play collegiate softball at Patten University in Oakland. While there, she studied elementary education and graduated with a BA in Liberal Studies in 2006 and her multiple subject teaching credential in 2007. Upon her college graduation, Aguirre returned to the area and began her teaching career in Morgan Hill.

Aguirre has been a Morgan Hill Unified School District teacher for 14 years, and brings a wealth of knowledge to the board. She has taught a variety of grade levels including Special Day Class and is currently a math intervention instructor in the Morgan Hill Unified School District. Throughout her career, Aguirre focused her daily work and passion on teaching English Learners at a Title 1 school.  Aguirre also spent five years mentoring new teachers from transitional kindergarten through 12th grades. Mentoring helped deepen her understanding of strong teacher-support and how districts function. Melissa knows the effort it takes to teach virtually but also what it looks like from the parent perspective. Aguirre believes that all students deserve a high-quality education from highly-qualified teachers.

Melissa grew up with a father who was very involved in her education and on school site boards. She takes pride in following in his footsteps. She is happy to be part of this board and looks forward to positively impacting the children and families in our community.

Aguirre is the loving wife of Jeff, a school administrator in San Benito County and the doting Mom of two young boys, Nolan and Nico, who are both students in the Gilroy Unified School District.

Melissa Aguirre represents Trustee Area 6.
